Here are some of the trends happening with Star Wars content in late 2021 and into 2022.
Despite the original trilogy hitting theaters 44 years ago, the Star Wars franchise is still finding ways to pump out new content in today's streaming-platform-dominated world.
The most notable trends happening in Star Wars right now are the recent release of the animated series "Visions," and the upcoming releases of live action shows such as "The Book of Boba Fett," "Andor," and "Kenobi," all in 2022 on Disney Plus.
"Visions" is an animated series of nine episodes made in the style of Japanese Anime productions. The stories of "Visions" focus mostly on brand new characters and storylines that we have not been introduced to in other Star Wars movies or shows. Each episode in this series is less than 20 minutes long. This show is really meant to showcase the creativity of anime and how it can bring Star Wars stories to life in ways we have never seen. In my opinion, these short stories don't offer the best Star Wars plot lines, however it is very refreshing to see Star Wars animated this way.
As for the upcoming releases of "The Book of Boba Fett," "Andor," and "Kenobi," I have mixed emotions.
Obviously, I have not seen a single episode of any of these shows yet. However, I am nervous for the Boba Fett and Andor shows. There are some stories that stem from the original trilogy/prequels that I welcome with open arms, (Kenobi, Ashoka) and there are some that I don't think are necessary. With Boba Fett and Andor, I feel like these are somewhat desperate attempts to explore storylines that the fans don't need to see - especially Andor.
Even though the original trilogy-related Star Wars stories have been given to us in a variety of ways, Boba Fett has always been a pretty mysterious, interesting character. So, although I personally don't see the need for a story about him replacing Jaba the Hutt as the King of the crime world, I can see how some people would.
"Andor" on the other hand, is a show that is going to be based on the supporting character Cassian Andor from the spin-off movie "Rogue One" that came out in 2016. A show about the main character from this movie might be understandable. But an entire show based upon the adventures of a supporting character that many people might not even remember, does not seem necessary to me.
The upcoming show that I am most excited for, however, is "Kenobi." Obi Wan Kenobi has become one of the most loved characters from the Star Wars universe. He's wise, confident, strong, humorous, and empathetic. Also, the time period that this show is taking place is somewhere in the 17 years between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. There is so much that has yet to be explored from this time frame. Also, seeing a reunion between Obi Wan, and his former apprentice Anakin Skywalker (now the evil Darth Vader), is must-see TV. They have also brought the original actors for both of these characters back for the show, making it even more compelling.
In summary, I'm sure there will be some entertaining aspects of each of these upcoming Star Wars shows. However, the one I am looking forward to the most is "Kenobi," and the two I am the most apprehensive about are "Andor," and "The Book of Boba Fett."
